PHRASE OF THE WEEK

“Natal quer dizer espírito de amor… um tempo quando o amor de Deus e o amor dos seres humanos deveriam prevalecer acima de todo o ódio e amargura.”

(Christmas means a spirit of love… a time when the love of God and the love of human beings should rise above all hatred and bitterness.)

A line that echoes the heart of a Portuguese Christmas — where warmth, kindness, and community soften even the coldest days of winter.

👉Always fun to learn these idioms, but take care using them.

Each month, From Viana chats with someone who calls this coast home — longtime locals, creative newcomers, or global wanderers who’ve settled under our northern skies.
Five questions. Five glimpses into what makes life here worth living.

Small shifts, shared spaces, and local updates that make Viana feel like home.

A Viana Classic Returns

Luziamar 2.0 — A Tribute to a Local Legend

For over two decades, Luziamar was one of the great nightspots of Viana and Galicia — the kind of place people still tell stories about.
This December, it’s being remembered once again.

On 20 December, Clube Lote 5 (Viana Marina) will host Luziamar 2.0, a tribute party bringing back some of its iconic music and atmosphere.

Expect performances from local favourites including DJ Vítor Coutinho and Zezé Gonçalves, in a night dedicated to nostalgia, community, and a piece of Viana’s cultural history.

📍 Location: Clube Lote 5, Viana do Castelo Marina
📆 Date: 20 December

A nice shout-out to the city’s musical roots — and a reminder of the places that shaped local memory.

Big Waves for Viana’s Surf Center — €700K Upgrade Announced

The Centro de Alto Rendimento (CAR) de Surf at Cabedelo is riding a new wave of investment — €700,000 has been allocated for upgrades and rehabilitation.

Part of a national €65 million plan between the Portuguese Government, the Olympic Committee, and the Paralympic Committee, the project puts Viana firmly on the map as one of Portugal’s leading hubs for high-performance and inclusive water sports.

🔹 €512,000 will go toward new facilities for para-surfing athletes, including therapy, training, and hygiene areas.
🔹 A marine sustainability interpretation center and eco-“lighthouse” will promote environmental education.
🔹 Sustainable wooden construction, renewable energy systems, and full accessibility will define the upgraded space.
🔹 Another €188,000 will improve equipment — from acoustic insulation to athlete accommodation.

The CAR Surf Center already serves surfers, bodyboarders, windsurfers, and kitesurfers — and it’s a launch pad for local youth, too. These upgrades strengthen its position as a training base for top-level athletes heading toward the 2028 Olympic Games, while anchoring Viana do Castelo’s reputation as a coastal city where sport, sustainability, and community truly meet.

A Shout-Out to Our Young Eco-Heroes

Last week, Viana welcomed hundreds of scouts from across the country for Ação Bandeira 2025 — a brilliant initiative led by Corpo Nacional de Escutas (CNE).

Scouts from regions including Viana do Castelo, Braga, Coimbra, and Lisbon came together for workshops, activities, and a large-scale clean-up at Praia Norte.

Their energy, teamwork, and commitment to caring for our coast deserve a big spotlight.
These are the kinds of community actions that remind us what’s possible when young people lead with purpose.

👏 To every scout and volunteer involved: thank you for showing us what local pride looks like in action.

Next week in Viana do Castelo? Think: umbrellas out, cozy jackets on. 🌧️

  • Monday & Tuesday: expect rain and probably some drama from heavy showers — perfect excuse to stay in with a warm drink. ☕

  • Wednesday: clouds and chill vibes, temperatures just chillin’ around ~13 °C.

  • End of the week: rain’s back, but days are slightly milder (around 15-16 °C) — still a good idea to bring that umbrella everywhere.

All in all — it’s a “rainy blanket” kind of week. Not ideal for bikinis ☀️, but hey: great for cozy sweaters and rainy-day music. 🎶

💡 Send us your favourite photo of this week’s skies — we’ll feature reader shots in future editions.”
