Welcome to Issue #9💛

Olá friends👋.

This week, we’re heading up north on the coast road to Moledo.

We love it when Moledo comes into view from the open road.

Stunning.

The waves roll in smooth and steady, the air smells of pine and salt, and the vibe is effortlessly cool.

It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down. Mornings begin with coffee and sea spray, afternoons with surfboards and kites tracing the horizon. And just offshore, the island of Ínsua keeps watch — part fortress, part monastery, all mystery.

Between art, ocean, and old legends, Moledo has its own rhythm and vibe.

Now, let’s dive in.

Inside this week’s issue:

Forte da Ínsua

PHRASE OF THE WEEK

“Porque o coração lembra o que a história tenta esquecer.”

(Because the heart remembers what history tries to forget.)

A line that could have been written for Pedro and Inês and for Moledo itself, where legend, art, and memory meet by the sea.

FEATURE STORY

Moledo — Where the Pines Meet the Sea

If you drive north from Viana on the coast road past Ancora, the road opens to one of the coast’s coolest treasures - Moledo.

Sheltered by the Camarido pine forest on one side and looking straight across the water to Spain’s Monte de Santa Tecla, the village feels like it’s been tucked between wind and tide on purpose.

Once, this was a working shoreline of windmills, grain, and stone fish traps called camboas, where families timed their days by the tide.

Artist Pantonio

Today, it’s a blend of timeless calm and summer sparkle and funk.

A place where locals still greet each other on morning walks, and surfers share the waves with seagulls.

Moledo’s name means a small mound of stones, and history hides under every one of them. The first civic associations here date back to the 1600s, the land once belonged to dukes, and even a naval bombardment brushed its shore in 1919. Yet the rhythm of the village never really changed… sea, sand, pine, repeat.

From the beach, you can spot Ilha da Ínsua, a tiny island crowned by a fort and a monastery built by Franciscan monks in the 1300s.

Today, Moledo has quietly become the region’s best-kept seaside treat.  It's  elegant without trying, naturally beautiful, and just wild enough to feel real.

Come for a swim, a sunset DJ set, or a stroll through the pines. You’ll see why so many people arrive for a weekend and end up coming back every year.

Ricardo & Telma — The Sound of Moledo

They’re the founders of SonicBlast, Portugal’s biggest festival dedicated to stoner, psychedelic rock, and metal. The festival was held in Moledo itself for the first nine years, now its held at Praia da Duna dos Caldeiroes Ancora, just 5 mins up the coast.

What started back in 2011 as a one-day event with local bands has grown into an international gathering that draws fans from across Europe.

Think surf by day, riffs by night  and a creative scene buzzing with art, tattoos, and vinyl.

Ricardo and Telma built SonicBlast from the ground up, driven by passion, community, and a love for sound that runs deep. Beyond the festival, they keep the music flowing year-round, curating gigs in Porto and bringing fresh acts to the stage.

Their story is pure Moledo — bold, independent, and a little bit loud.

Small shifts, shared spaces, and local updates that make Viana feel like home.

🎨 Community News | MAP de Moledo — Art in the Open Air

Moledo has quietly become an outdoor art gallery.

The MAP project (Mostra de Arte Pública de Moledo) brings together students from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon and local partners to create public sculptures inspired by the timeless story of Pedro and Inês de Castro.

Over the years, this collaboration has turned the village into a living exhibition — with pieces scattered through streets, viewpoints, and paths. Each work connects contemporary creativity with Portugal’s most famous love story.

One highlight, “Uma Casa para Inês”, was unveiled in May 2025 and stands as a tribute to love, art, and memory.

Visitors can explore the sculptures by following small heart-and-crown markers around the village — a playful nod to Moledo’s past. For local maps or guidance, stop by the parish office or ask at the Lourinhã tourism site.

The project continues to grow, adding new works and collaborations each year — proof that Moledo’s heart beats not just by the sea, but through art.

Big Waves for Viana’s Surf Center — €700K Upgrade Announced

The Centro de Alto Rendimento (CAR) de Surf at Cabedelo is riding a new wave of investment — €700,000 has been allocated for upgrades and rehabilitation.

Part of a national €65 million plan between the Portuguese Government, the Olympic Committee, and the Paralympic Committee, the project puts Viana firmly on the map as one of Portugal’s leading hubs for high-performance and inclusive water sports.

🔹 €512,000 will go toward new facilities for para-surfing athletes, including therapy, training, and hygiene areas.
🔹 A marine sustainability interpretation center and eco-“lighthouse” will promote environmental education.
🔹 Sustainable wooden construction, renewable energy systems, and full accessibility will define the upgraded space.
🔹 Another €188,000 will improve equipment — from acoustic insulation to athlete accommodation.

The CAR Surf Center already serves surfers, bodyboarders, windsurfers, and kitesurfers — and it’s a launch pad for local youth, too. These upgrades strengthen its position as a training base for top-level athletes heading toward the 2028 Olympic Games, while anchoring Viana do Castelo’s reputation as a coastal city where sport, sustainability, and community truly meet.

Ínsua Island: The Monastery in the Waves

Just off Moledo Beach, about 200 meters from shore, lies one of northern Portugal’s most fascinating secrets... Ilha da Ínsua.

Forte da Ínsua

In the late 1300s, Franciscan monks from Galicia built a monastery here over a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Ínsua. Centuries later, it became part of the Forte da Ínsua, a stone fortress that protected both the coast and the cloistered lives of the friars.

For generations, the monks lived surrounded by salt spray and prayer, growing their own food and keeping the chapel lamps burning while soldiers guarded the ramparts above.

Today, the island’s weathered walls still stand — a mix of faith and fortification carved by the Atlantic.

You can only reach it by boat from Caminha or Moledo, and on low-tide mornings locals say you might glimpse the old land bridge that once connected it to the beach.

Restoration plans are underway to turn the site into a cultural and educational space, preserving its quiet magic for the future.

It’s the kind of place that feels almost mythical.  Close enough to see, and to surf past but distant enough to remind you how history always leaves something just out of reach.

Food is one of the purest ways to experience a place.

Each week, we’ll share one traditional dish and one new discovery blending the flavours of history with the tastes shaping Viana today.

New Discovery:

O Coberto – Moledo

Tucked along Rua João Baptista da Silva, O Coberto feels less like a restaurant and more like dropping in on friends who happen to cook beautifully.

An open kitchen hums at the centre of the space — dishes built around whatever’s freshest that day, often with bright salads, creative vegetarian options, and local produce served simply and well.

Guests rave about the warmth as much as the food: attentive staff, relaxed pace, and that unmistakable feeling of eating something made with care.
Menus change daily, prices are fair (€15–20), and the experience is as genuine as it gets on the coas
